Our first pieces are crafted from a 60% banana fibre, 40% organic cotton blend. Imagine your favourite high-quality, medium-heavy cotton T-shirt. Now, make it softer, sturdier, and better at holding its shape.
The result is a shirt that drapes just right, feels breathable and smooth against your skin, and keeps looking sharp wear after wear thanks to the natural strength of banana fibre.
And here’s the game-changer: banana fibre is naturally odour-resistant. That means you won’t need to wash it after every wear, a win for both your time and the planet.

FROM TREE TO RAW FIBRE

The Banana Tree provides it's fruit once in it's natural lifecycle, after which it begins to die and becomes an agricultural waste byproduct. If not reused, the stem of the tree is often burned, left to rot or in some cases processed into fertilizer.
The stem of the tree must be collected within days of the banana harvest, before it begins to naturally decompose. The stem consists of outer and inner layers; we extract the raw fibre from the outer layers.
The stem layers are manually removed by banana farm workers based on their availability and desire, which provides them with an additional source of income. The layers are run through a decortication machine, which also sprays it with water to wash them. The Raw fibre is now extracted.

FROM RAW FIBRE TO TEXTILE FIBRE

After extraction, banana fibres are cleaned and dried away from direct sunlight. In their raw form, they’re too coarse for clothing and typically used for basketry or mats. Traditionally, chemical treatments were needed to soften them, but Pomona partners with innovators using low-impact, non-chemical methods.

For our first collection, we’ve teamed up with PYRATEX to create a soft, durable fabric made from 60% banana fibre and 40% organic cotton, using a natural enzymatic softening process. We're also developing a 100% banana fibre material with another partner, using a proprietary mechanical process with heat and pressure to extract the cellulose. This lightweight yet strong fabric will debut in T-shirts, sweaters, and sweatpants for Fall/Winter 2025.
